Earlier this week, the state of New York has asked the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to lease four areas off New York’s Atlantic Coast for offshore wind generation. There are at least four areas available for offshore wind construction. The potential is great and growing, as these new wind energy areas can generate over 3,200 MW of offshore wind generation.

New York’s Commitment to Offshore Wind

Offshore wind is a massive component in helping the state reach its sustainability goals. Governor Andrew Cuomo has said that by 2030, he expects to achieve 50% renewable energy by 2030, 2,400 MW of offshore wind generation, and a GHG emissions reduction of 40% below 1990 levels.

New York has committed to installing 2.4 GW of offshore wind, which is the equivalent of taking 1 million cars off of the road. BOEM and the state of New York are well on their way to each their MWh goal, if not surpass it.

Speeding Up the Process

The state is requesting that BOEM hasten the process as much as possible. They want to expedite the site identification so that the development of offshore wind is almost guaranteed. The good news is, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) plays a huge role in this feat. They are making sure to minimize any impact that these new offshore wind sites may have on the offshore habitats.

New York is well on its way to becoming one of the top states supporting renewable energy. Other states are expected to follow this sustainable trend.
